The Malta Weightlifting Federation (MWF) launched their competitive season last month with a test competition at the Cottonera Sports Complex.

The event was intended to give local lifters a chance to gauge their form ahead of an eventful calendar of local and international competitions. The federation has just elected a new committee, headed by David Saliba.

Points were awarded according to how much was lifted in relation to body weight. Saliba lifted 190kgs for 223 points. He will represent the country in the European Masters Championships in Cyprus this year.

Noel Coleiro lifted 250kgs for 286 points. The test competition was part of his preparation for the 2007 tournament for European small nations in Saarland, Germany.

Matthew Muscat Inglott had 188kgs for 227 points. He will travel to Italy for the European Promotion Cup.

Clive Zammit and Gordon Cachia kept the pressure on during the test competition after producing a creditable display of technique and power.
