Russian challenger Sultan Ibragimov outpointed America's Shannon Briggs to claim the World Boxing Organisation heavyweight title in Atlantic City on Saturday.

Briggs, making his first defence of the title, towered over the 32-year-old Russian, but the 2000 Olympic silver medalist beat the lumbering champion to the punch to record a unanimous decision.

The judges scored it 119-109, 117-111 and 115-113 in favour of Ibragimov, who improved his record to 21-0-1 in a match that was originally scheduled for March 10 in New York but was postponed when Briggs went down with a case of pneumonia.
