In his homily on the occasion of the canonisation of Dun Gorg Preca, Pope Benedict XVI said:

"Born in Valletta on the island of Malta, George Preca was a friend of Jesus and witness of the holiness that comes from Him. He was a clergyman dedicated to evangelisation: Preaching, writing, being a spiritual guide and administering the sacraments, but most of all, leading by living an exemplary life.

"The expression from the Gospel of St John, "Verbum dei Caro Factum Est" always guided his spirit and action, and, therefore, God has been able to use him in order to give birth to a commendable organisation, the Society of Christian Doctrine, which sought to ensure all parishes had the service of well-prepared, qualified and generous catechists.

"A profoundly spiritual priest, he was deeply in love with God, with Jesus, the Virgin Mary and saints. He loved to repeat: 'Dear God how grateful I am to you. Thank you God. Forgive me!'

"Saint George Preca helps the Church to always be, in Malta and in the world, the faithful echo of Christ's voice."
