The Victoria International Arts Festival is growing in stature with every passing year. This month and next will see the festival celebrate its 10th anniversary with a truly impressive list of participating artistes.

The festival opens on June 15 with a concert by the Festive Brass Ensemble in St George's Basilica in Victoria. In fact, all the events right through to the last concert on July 22 will either be in the basilica, the square outside or in the Aula Mgr G. Farrugia. During this month the festival will welcome artists from Japan, Slovenia, Italy, UK and Norway.

The events will commence at 8 p.m, with the exception of the Inaugural concert by the Laudate Pueri Choir (dir: George J. Frendo) to mark the completion of the illumination project at St George's Basilica (Malta). This is scheduled to start at 8.30 p.m on June 30.

Highlights of this month's programme include a first visit by the Hibiki Choir from Japan on June 16. A vocal recital on June 21 by tenor Tim Ribic and baritone Jaki Jurgec from Slovenia. On June 23 there will be a return visit by virtuoso clarinetist Roberto Meoni from Italy, this time as part of a trio comprising Snr Meoni, English cellist Simon Webb and pianist John Grundy. Norway will be represented in a concert in the Aula Mgr G. Farrugia on June 25, when Norwegian artists interpret music by their greatest composer in An Evening of Music by Grieg. There is more Norwegian music on June 25, when the Duo Taus, composed of violinist Liv Hilde Klokk and cellist Torun Saeter give a recital in the basilica.

There are actually no fewer than 13 concerts this month and 14 more to come in July. This promises to be the most impressive series of concerts in the 10-year history of the Victoria International Arts Festival.

Incidentally, all concerts are free of charge. However, for a donation of Lm15 you may reserve a seat for all the concerts.
