Simoni wins stage

Italy's Gilberto Simoni won the 17th stage of the Giro d'Italia from Lienz in Austria, to the summit of Monte Zoncolan in Italy yesterday. Italy's Danilo Di Luca of the Liquigas team retained the overall race lead, finishing fourth 31 seconds behind Simoni, who won the Giro in 2001 and 2003.

Today's 203 km 18th stage is from Udine to Riese Pio X. The Giro ends in Milan on Sunday.
