Monaco holds fond memories for the Maltese Olympic Committee fraternity, particularly the tennis federation. In 1987, the Mediterranean principality hosted the second edition of the Games and provided Malta with its first GSSE gold medal when Carol Curmi and Helen Asciak won the tennis doubles event.
There were scenes of joy among the modest Maltese contingent as Asciak and Curmi convincingly beat Luxembourg pair K. Schwendt and G. Huberty 6-3 6-4.
Curmi and Asciak made headway in the 1987 singles competition as well and qualified to figure in the play-off for third place. However, they declined to play against each other and decided to share the bronze medal.
Curmi and Asciak went on to establish themselves as the 'Golden Ladies' of Team Malta in the GSSE.
After Monaco '87, they retained their doubles title in Cyprus '89, Andorra '91 and Malta 1993.
