The initiative, taken by government over the past few years, to involve the public in discussions prior to issuing the pre-budget document is one which should be fittingly praised. Continuous dialogue with the man in the street is a determining factor for the government to stay close to people's needs and perceptions. This is perhaps more the case with Gozo and its people, who due to the island's double-insularity risk feeling left out and forgotten. This, however, wasn't the case at the dialogue held recently with the Prime Minister at the Ministry for Gozo.

Suggestions from the floor referred to Gozo's achievements in the educational and health sectors while stressing the need for more attention in order that Gozitans continue to be given equal opportunities as their Maltese counterparts. The importance of the tourism industry for the island's economic sustainability was also mentioned and while acknowledging what has been addressed towards this industry up to now, participants also pointed out further relevant areas from which tourism in Gozo would benefit. This would prove also beneficial towards increasing employment in Gozo which was also another topic brought up for the government's attention.

Such Djalogu mal-Prim Ministru meetings clearly show that the government is sensitive to Gozo's special needs and the Gozitans showed their appreciation by attending and participating numerously. Such involvement will surely strengthen Gozo as a region and the Gozitans as European citizens.
