An article about the increased rate of carbon emissions was accompanied by a photograph of a power station (May 23).

Many readers may assume the white columns rising from the cooling towers are smoke, but they are in fact water vapour. The smoke-stacks are undoubtedly emitting carbon dioxide and probably other contaminants, but no visible smoke.
