André Schembri is closing in on a move to a foreign club after it emerged that a German team has expressed interest in signing the Malta striker.

The Times yesterday learned that the Marsaxlokk forward, who turned 21 on Sunday, travelled to Germany last weekend for discussions with officials of an unnamed Division Three club.

As Schembri has a contract until 2009 with the local Premier League champions, his suitors must negotiate his outright transfer or a loan deal with Marsaxlokk. Sources have told The Times that the German club are looking to sign Schembri on loan for one season.

Schembri, who is a certainty to be included in Malta's 20-man squad for the Euro 2008 qualifiers away to Norway next Saturday and Bosnia Herzegovina four days later, has also caught the eye of other foreign clubs.

Meanwhile, Paul Fenech, the Msida St Joseph, is the latest player to be linked with a move to Premier League club Valletta. Julian Holland, the player's agent, confirmed to The Times that the Citizens have enquired about the possibility of signing the Malta U-21 midfielder.
