Man robbed of Lm50,000 in tunnel hold-up

Close to Lm50,000 were reported stolen from a foreign businessman in a daring hold-up yesterday at about 2.30 p.m., the police said.

The businessman was driving through the Regional Road tunnel in the direction of Paceville when a car that had just overtaken him stopped in front of him just before reaching the end of the tunnel. Two armed, hooded men emerged from the car and demanded cash. The businessman is believed to be a frequent visitor to the island, where he comes to buy locally made body care products and perfumes. He was not injured.

This is the second robbery in the space of a few days. Close to Lm5,000 were reported stolen in a hold-up on a petrol station owner on Saturday. The theft allegedly took place in Misrah San Alwigi, Birkirkara.

Two hooded men armed with pistols stopped one of the owners of a petrol station situated in Triq Naxxar, Lija, as he was returning home.
