Rock climbing is an important ingredient in the government's efforts to continue strengthening the Malta tourism product, Tourism Minister Francis Zammit Dimech said.

Speaking during the inauguration of the first phase of a project to render an area in Wied Babu, near Zurrieq, fit for rock climbing, Dr Zammit Dimech said there was a great potential for the climbing market that could attract about 8,000 visitors each year.

Potential markets for this activity were Germany and France, he said, adding that the Malta Tourism Authority and a number of voluntary organisations are pooling resources to improve climbing facilities.

Five sites in Malta and two in Gozo have been identified for the first phase of the project.

Dr Zammit Dimech said the MTA has purchased loads of bolts that are used for climbing and these are being fixed on site by members of the Malta Rock Climbing Club.
