BICREF helped by Vodafone Malta Foundation

To celebrate the International Day for Biological Diversity 2007 held worldwide on May 22, Vodafone Malta Foundation is supporting a new one-hour environmental documentary by the Biological Conservation Research Foundation (BICREF) about marine biodiversity. This documentary, focusing mainly on dolphins, whales and turtles, aims to raise awareness on vulnerable fauna and habitats that need urgent conservation.

Vodafone Malta Foundation has also supported the distribution of six BICREF documentaries discussing the problems of climate and environmental change on biodiversity and the effects of all this on all the living beings.

BICREF will be showing and distributing its award winning documentary to upper secondary education entities including MCAST, private, Church and state sixth forms. A copy will also be forwarded to the AV Library CCT of the University of Malta for education and research purposes. These documentaries have been produced with the assistance of the Ministries of Finance and Tourism.

These documentaries have also been aired on all three main local TV channels and on an Australian TV channel, constantly receiving excellent appraisals for the production.

As part of the BioDiversity Day celebrations, BICREF has organised a discussion with youths about the meaning of biodiversity and the 2010 target to halt its loss, through conservation, research and action. BICREF also discussed the problems of climate and environmental change on biodiversity and the effects of all this on us. This discussion was held at St Martin's College.

Malta Historical Society turns 57

The Malta Historical Society recently celebrated its 57th anniversary with a dinner at the Taste Restaurant, Fortina Hotel. Guests of honour were the President and Mrs Fenech Adami.

In a pre-dinner address, the President showed his appreciation for the work of the society and its scholarly publications, and had a special word of praise for the society's Website which is bringing the learned articles published in the society's journal Melita Historica to a wide international audience.

The President presented certificates to Judge Maurice Caruana Curran, Mgr Lawrence Gatt and Franco Masini, who have been active members of the society since its foundation in 1950. Other recipients, including Judge Giovanni Bonello and Chev. Joseph Sammut, could not be present.

In his welcoming address, society president Professor Mario Buhagiar outlined the achievements of the society in fostering a scholarly and better informed approach to the study and interpretation of Maltese history, and highlighted the academic significance of Melita Historica which is now in its 14th volume.

"All important historians, both Maltese and non-Maltese who, in the past 57 years have broadened the perspectives of Maltese history have used it to publish some of their fundamental studies," he stressed.

One very sore point was the fact that in spite of its recognised contribution to Maltese historical studies the Malta Historical Society is still without its own premises.

This means that the committee has no fixed place where to hold its meetings and where to keep its archive and store its publications. There have been various attempts in the past to secure suitable premises, but they have all failed. At the moment the society has approached the Department of Lands for the lease of a small but convenient tenement in Valletta.

Professor Buhagiar expressed the fervent hope that the society's efforts will this time meet with success. He also remembered the founder of the society, Mgr Professor Arturo Bonnici, who served as its president until his death in 1978, and his other predecessors, Professor Mgr Vincent Borg, Professor Godfrey Wettinger and Dr Albert Ganado.

He also singled out Dr Joseph Grima, who has served the society as secretary for many years, and Salvatore Mousù, the treasurer, for their hard work.

Vodafone supports ICT courses

The Rabat (Malta) council, in collaboration with Vodafone Malta Ltd and TCTC Ltd, is supporting the Rabat community by providing free ICT courses for residents of all ages.

Over 300 people are attending these courses which are being held at the council premises. Vodafone is supporting TCTC Ltd, the computer training centre, in organising free IT and telecommunication courses in various localities. It is also supporting a training initiative, called 'Learn It', which is spread across 42 councils, aiming to narrow the digital divide.

Mikhail Gerchuk, chief commercial officer at Vodafone, said, "We are a telecommunications company, and we are happy to support the local community to receive training in technology, that will assist them in their daily lives."

Rabat mayor Dr Frank Fabri said his council congratulated Vodafone for its support and commitment towards local communities and said that an encouraging percentage of the students who received training at the Rabat council also took part in follow-up subsidised courses.

Participants are taught how to make use of online services, such as those from government departments, how to shop online, use Internet banking, file a report to the police, file a complaint to the local council and much more.

Through the support of Vodafone, students obtain hands-on experience and learn about the basic features of a mobile phone, such as how to send and receive an SMS and an MMS, add new contacts, use Vodafone services from the phone and through the Website, understand how to top up their phone and similar functions that are so important in everyday life.

TCTC sets up computer laboratories powered with state-of-the-art equipment and broadband Internet connections. The 'Learn It' campaign took off last June, and over 4,000 applicants participated. These ranged from young students and adults, to parents and the elderly. Applications are obtained from local councils.
