A major heavy transport vessel yesterday arrived at Malta Shipyards for a conversion project that will take till the end of the year to complete.
The Fairmount Fjell proceeded to the yard's Marsa site and is the second of two major heavy transport vessel conversion projects announced last year.
Conversion work on the first vessel, Fairmount Fjord, continues at the Bormla site. This vessel was floated for the first time at the end of last week.
These two Fairmount projects are the largest conversion projects of this type that the Malta Shipyards have ever undertaken.
In a statement, the shipyard said that serious management commitment has been required to plan, gather and co-ordinate all the resources required.
"The successful conclusion of both Fairmount projects depends on the yard's performance; the required progress on this work depends on the concerted effort of each and every worker involved," it said.
Malta Shipyards said it had a heavy workload and busy period ahead.
"What is required during this period is that each and every worker is on the job on time and gives their best effort to produce quality work and maintain a safe environment.
"The offshore industry will be looking at the Malta Shipyards' performance on these projects as a benchmark of the yard's capabilities. The outcome of these contracts will directly influence the future of the shipyards and further opportunities in the large conversion market," the shipyards said.
