Mr Albert Gauci Cunningham (The Sunday Times, May 13) is right to say that divorce is evil. But he is not right to say that it is a necessary evil. Evil is to be avoided and never necessary. Only good is necessary.

Although marriage break-ups, adultery and cohabitation are widespread in Malta, the solution must never be to legalise something which makes matters worse and causes adults and children to suffer. When it is impossible for a married couple to live together, let them separate, but never divorce. They should be helped as quickly as possible, if they have grounds for annulment.

Married couples must work hard at their marriage for it to be a success. Love is like an electric bulb, the switch has to remain on, so that the power can pass through and love is rekindled throughout the many years of their lives together. Praying together is an important secret for a happy marriage because without God we can do nothing. The more we drift away from God's teachings, the more we think that it is impossible to practise Christian moral values. Jesus knows what is best for us and He is very clearly against divorce.
