Di Luca wins 12th stage to take Giro d'Italia lead

Italy's Danilo Di Luca won the 12th stage of the Giro d'Italia from Pinerolo to Briancon in France and took the overall race lead yesterday. Di Luca outsprinted compatriot Gilberto Simoni at the end of the first key mountain stage of this year's race.

Italy's Danilo Di Luca won the 12th stage of the Giro d'Italia from Pinerolo to Briancon in France and took the overall race lead yesterday.

Di Luca outsprinted compatriot Gilberto Simoni at the end of the first key mountain stage of this year's race. Andy Schleck of Luxembourg finished third, seven seconds behind.

Liquigas rider Di Luca leads the overall standings by one minute three seconds from Marzio Bruseghin with Spain's David Arroyo third at 1:16.

Today's 13th stage is a 12.6-km uphill individual time trial from Biella to Santuario di Oropa.
