Scunthorpe collect second title in their history

Walsall promoted after one year in League Two

The only other time Scunthorpe United won a championship title was back in 1964 when they were crowned champions of Division III (North).

This season, the Iron of Glanford Park added the League One title and will be playing in The Championship in 2007/08.

Forty-three years have passed since Scunthorpe last figured in the second grade of the English game.

It is indeed a great honour for Nigel Atkins's side and their supporters. In early November they sacked Brian Laws and appointed Atkins.

Bristol City gained the other automatic promotion slot from League One after finishing runners-up to Scunthorpe.

League Two champions Walsall bounced back at the first attempt.

Last year, they finished bottom of League One but regained their status as title winners.

Walsall clinched only the second piece of silverware in their entire history after they had finished champions of the 'old' Division IV in 1959-60.

Hartlepool United and Swindon Town were also promoted after finishing behind Walsall in the final standings.

Boston and Torquay lost their Football League status and were relegated to the Conference League. They will be replaced by champions Dagenham & Redbridge and Morecambe, who won the promotion play-offs. This will be the duo's first ever appearance in the Football League.

Boston lasted only five years in League Two as they slid back to the Conference.

Torquay are out of the Football League structure for the first time since 1927.

The Johnstone's Paint Trophy - the silverware for the winners of the knock-out competition for sides in the lower divisions - went to Doncaster Rovers.

They defeated Bristol Rovers 3-2 (Forte, Heffernan, Lee - Walker, Igo) after extra time in Cardiff.
