Magic at the Manoel

When The Magic Flute was performed at our national theatre recently Justine Pearson, 10, of Rabat, was in the audience

On April 21, I went to see The Magic Flute, an opera for children by the famous composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The performance took place at the Manoel, one of the most beautiful theatres in Europe.

Though I have been to other theatres before, this was my first visit to the Manoel and I can say it is really beautiful and we must be proud of it. I was glad to see the theatre full of children and parents.

The cast was made up of Prince Tamino, Princess Pamina, Papageno, the bird catcher, Papagena, the Queen of the Night, Sarastro, Monostatos and three ladies. They all performed very well and had great voices. The performance started with the seven musicians playing two violins, a cello, a viola, a bassoon, clarinet and, obviously, the flute which I very much admired and appreciated since I play the piano.

The costumes were colourful, especially the ones for Papageno and Papagena. At times the actors made us laugh and everyone enjoyed himself as I could tell from the happy faces around me.

One thing I noticed and I really liked is that before the performances started the musicians had a chat with the children.

Well done to the cast, the musicians and all the team. It would be nice to go again to the Manoel Theatre. Thanks to Junior News for giving me the opportunity to go and see this show after taking part in a competition.
