A woman was yesterday charged with stealing a cheque book and defrauding various companies when she made use of the forged cheques.

Alexia Cross, 27, of Gzira, pleaded not guilty to stealing an HSBC cheque book belonging to Rachel Ann Djadi-Hallam, forging her signature and defrauding Ms Djadi-Hallam, HSBC Bank and several companies in excess of Lm3,000 over the past months.

She was also charged with making false declarations to the authorities, lying under oath and breaching a probation order.

She was granted bail against a Lm500 deposit and a personal guarantee of Lm1,000.

Magistrate Edwina Grima presided over the arraignment.

Police Inspector Ian Abdilla prosecuted.

Lawyer Raphael Fenech Adami was defence counsel.
