This is not the first dispute that Monti hawkers have had with the government. Once more it ended up turning into a political issue.

The hawkers claimed that moving further down Merchants Street would affect their sales.

Doesn't this mean they must do something about their wares and way of doing business?

In markets abroad, once the product is good and offers value for money, people go for it no matter where the stalls are mounted.

While the market should stay in Valletta, how about getting a licence for a late-night market, not necessarily in the capital city but perhaps, say, in Paceville? They could open in the mornings during the week and set up shop in the evening on weekends.

I do wish that when such issues crop up, people don't put their foot down as if there are no other options available, and try to come up with fresh ideas.

And please leave politics for other issues, rather than turning and twisting any local issue to suit a political agenda.
