The new Alfa Romeo Spider, according to UCIM Co. Ltd managing director Francesca Mamo is "no ordinary car". Speaking at the local launch yesterday week at the Radisson Golden Sands Resort and Spain Ghajn Tuffieha, she said: "The Spider represents the return of a legend."

The new model is the "heir to the Giulietta Spider and the unforgettable Duetto - both genuine motoring icons". Ms Mamo went on to point out that the Spider immediately won the Cabrio of the Year 2006.

"It is the most stunning and evolved example of the new generation of Alfa Romeo cars. An all Italian car, (the Spider) is the result of collaboration between (the) Alfa Romeo style centre and two of the biggest names in Italian styling: Giugiaro and Pininfarina."

Ms Mamo was effusive about the essential, simple style of this two-seater, which she said conveys both elegance and strength - "it is not just beautiful as you will soon see, it is also the maximum expression of technology and sportiness".

Essentially derived from the Alfa Brera coupé, the Spider is "a generously scaled elegant two-seater. The interior is comfortable, highly sophisticated and features top quality technological contents."

Three versions are available, two with petrol engines: a 2.2-litre with 185 bhp and a 3.2-litre delivering 360 bhp, both being JTS engines; and a 2.4 JTD (diesel) with 200 bhp and a maximum speed of 225 kph.

"Alfa Spider is freedom, technology, Italian elegance on display on the world's roads," Ms Mamo concluded.

Among the guests was Julian Fittipaldi, head of sales and marketing for Alfa Romeo. For more information on the new Spider call at the Alfa Romeo showroom in Valley Road, Msida.
