The second concert in the International Bir Miftuh Music Festival, organised by Din l-Art Helwa, is a violin recital by Francesco D'Orazio, sponsored by the Italian Cultural Institute, with a programme featuring works by Bach, Berio, Paganini, Bellafronte, dall'Ongaro and Ysaye.

The concert is on Saturday at 8 p.m. at Santa Marija church, Bir Miftuh, which dates to 1450 and which, with its delightful medieval setting and perfect acoustics, makes a romantic backdrop to music of this calibre.

D'Orazio studied violin and viola under the tutorship of his father. He perfected his studies with Carlo Chiarappa and Cristiano Rossi, and undertook more advanced studies at the Mozarteum of Salzburg and at the Rubin Academy of Tel Aviv.

D'Orazio is very active in classical as well as contemporary music, where he is the favourite interpreter of many composers. Of particular significance is his long-standing collaboration with Luciano Berio, whose works he has premiered and interpreted on several occasions.

He has given concerts with renowned orchestras all over Europe, the United States, China, Japan, Peru, Mexico and Turkey. He is acclaimed by the international press, who describe him as a 'technical wizard', who holds audiences worldwide spellbound by his intense, passionate renderings.

Tickets at Lm8.50, including refreshments after the performance, can be obtained from Din l-Art Helwa, for whom all proceeds are dedicated to its restoration projects, tel: 2122-0358 or 2122-5952, or call at 133, Melita Street, Valletta. The church of Santa Marija of Bir Miftuh can be found to the left of the roundabout when approaching Malta International Airport.
