Following the correspondence about parking by the Sliema police station (The Sunday Times, March 11), it seems that not much has been done to date.

The only improvement I have seen is a portable 'No parking - tow zone' sign on a half-metre stick with a small cement base. I cannot understand the reasoning behind it since illegal parking still takes place. Some days ago there was a car parked along Manwel Dimech Street just touching the zebra crossing and I have also seen up to three cars parked in front of the police station. There is still no guarantee that space will be left for pedestrians to pass through safely.

If the Police Commissioner, to whom the first letter was addressed and the Assistant Commissioner, Superintendent and Police Inspectors do not take the necessary legal action where it is actually required, then who will?

Here is a proposal (right) of how the area can be made safer. Sliema council should take note, follow it up and make Sliema safer. Slightly rearranging the area and installing a couple of bollards makes a safe passage for pedestrians, pushchairs and wheelchairs, while leaving some parking space for police cars.
