Spinola Road in St Julians has recently been turned into a one-way road. I think that this was a very positive move by the authorities as it must have been one of the most chaotic roads on the island.
However, now it has become one of the most dangerous roads. Sign posts indicating "no entry" were placed overnight and drivers are expected to see these. When driving off such a main road, it is not easy to see new sign posts after having driven into the road for years on end. I must also point out that they are in awkward positions making it difficult to see them from the car. One of the sign posts is fixed onto a drainage pipe and faces 45 degrees away from the road. Therefore what happens is that careful drivers are passing the right way thinking that no one is going to drive towards them while other drivers who would not have seen the signs, simply keep going in as usual. There are also drivers who decide to be heroes and go in - and because they know they are in the wrong, they drive in at a very high speed to get to their destination without finding any obstacles. This is a danger to both pedestrians and drivers.
Since residents complained, a warden was sometimes sent to the end of the road. By sheer coincidence, I happened to be there while a warden was on duty and a car was coming in against the law. I couldn't believe my eyes at that instance. Rather than stopping the driver, the warden let her pass by and issued a ticket! Where is the education in all this? Are the wardens taught to issue tickets even at the expense of letting accidents take place?
I would like to appeal to the authorities to see to the situation before it is too late.
