Jo Ann Vassallo takes a look at this year's Malta Fashion Awards

After 10 years of successful events, it's once again fashion awards time with Unique Promotions and the Malta Fashion Awards - an established do on our local events calendar and yet again very much awaited for models, fashion professionals, designers and fashionistas in general. Adrian Mizzi's baby has now matured into a full-time quest in the world of fashion and an ongoing calendar of events that will finally reach a climax on the night of the fashion awards. Lately, we have also seen the birth of a new fashion TV programme related to Unique Promotions, another success on Mr Mizzi's account.

However, what I really wanted to find out when I caught up with Mr Mizzi for the second year running is what's happening in this year's hottest event. What influenced the choice of awards, the nominations, the nominees, the judges? Above all, I wanted to have a sneak preview of the itinerary - so here goes...

The show will be opened by none other than newcomer rock dude Klinsmann Coleiro. This young man, although of tender age, is already very much loved, so it will surely be a good start to a good show. As always the scope of the event is to promote anything to do with the local fashion industry; to expose fresh talents and to refresh our fashion ideas. To help us with the latter, we will be watching four fashion shows, each one by a local fashion designer who is new on the scene. Ernest Camilleri is in fact new to the fashion industry as his previous work concerned mostly theatrical appointments as a costumist, but his talent goes further in his up and coming 15-piece collection.

Designer Natash is also very fresh, having been on the scene for less than a year. George Muscat was a hidden talent but has finally taken the step towards fame in fashion and Madmat is only 23 years old but full of ideas for his catwalk presentation. He mostly works on men's attire but will be chipping in like the rest of the group to dress this year's compere, Pauline Agius. Ms Agius will be accompanied by the unmistakable voice of Carlo Borg Bonaci who will comment the catwalk and present the nominees. As always Mr Mizzi will be scrutinising the flow of the show and taking notes on what and what not to improve. After last's year's post-mortem he concluded that Mr Borg Bonaci's voice was an asset to catwalk commentary.

In fact, Mr Mizzi is always looking to improve, expand and discover what's new. Apart from scrutinising each yearly show, he attends each and every fashion event which makes him a very well-informed person in the world of fashion. Thanks to Unique Promotions we get to suss out the new faces and this also goes for the singers who will be entertaining us as there will be some fresh voices this year too. This year the contestants for female photo model and female model are the same five beauties with Christine Pillow as newcomer together with Katrina Pavia, Ford model and cover girl for Pink magazine, both ready to strut their stuff and compete with fellow models Stephanie Hodgkins (last year's winner), Corissa Vella White and Joanne Butterworth. The male model will be one of the three local hunks: David Camenzuli, Paul Vella and last year's winner Alex Psaila.

20070519-lifestyle--fashion2.jpgOther awards this year include the Hairstylist Award with a novelty. Double M represents a state-of-the-art partnership between top stylist Mario Borg from Papilla and Mark Stafrace from Club Cut. They have to fight for their prize against veterans Carlo Marsala (The Hair Lounge) and Stephanie Cassar (Love Birds). These nominees together with three-time winners Cut Coiffeur will be delighting us with a hair show on the night.

Would you like your make-up done by Shasha (last year's winner), Lorna Mugliett, Natasha Polidano, Nicola Powell or newcomer Elaine Stafrace? It's all for the anonymous judge panel to decide and to let us know tonight.

Alexandra Pace is once again running for Photographer Award against Brian Grech, Robert Camilleri and our new name in this sector, Alan Carville. The competition will get interesting as a surprise Fashion Advertising Award winner will be announced on the night. In the meantime, you will be able to sit back and enjoy the show because a fashion show by Intimate (swimwear and lingerie) awaits you together with more ideas by casual wear label Collezione.

Mr Mizzi is stressed at the moment as final preparations are under way.

Want to know more? Ira Losco, Scar, a body art show by Anthony Desira... enough I've already said too much.

• The Malta Fashion Awards are being held at the Mediterranean Conference Centre tonight at 8.30 p.m.
