Danica Spiteri and Stephania Magri have just returned from the Bedford International Cycling Tour where no fewer than 90 riders, most from the UK and Holland, took part.
The first stage consisted of a team time trial. Spiteri and Magri were in Team Greens along with Angela Pike. They covered the 9.7-km route in 14:17.
The second stage, held later in the day, consisted of an 80-km road race. Both Maltese cyclists kept up with the leading pack but lost valuable time as they had to slow down the pace due to an accident.
Magri finished in 2:18.06 and Spiteri crossed the line four minutes later.
The final stage was held the following day, over 80km, at Millbrook Testing Track in wet conditions.
Magri and Spiteri pedalled hard to remain in the peleton but found difficulty in downhills, due to the slippery roads and sharp bends. Magri dropped behind the group but Spiteri kept up the pace until the finish, covering the distance in 2:19.00.
The Bedford races was Spiteri's first experience in a competitive cycling tour abroad.
Overall, both riders were pleased with their performance and happy to have garnered more experience at this level.
