Angela Galea will be Malta's flagbearer for next month's Monaco GSSE.

Late yesterday, she received the symbolic flag from Archbishop Paul Cremona during a meeting with athletes at the University Sports Hall.

Galea, the only Maltese to have won a GSSE gold medal in swimming, will follow in the footsteps of Double Trap shooter William Chetcuti. He led the Maltese contingent during the opening ceremony of the Andorra Games in 2005.

"I think we could not have chosen a better person than Angela Galea to be our flag-bearer on June 4," Maltese Olympic Committee president Lino Farrugia Sacco said.

"While planning our shortlist we made it a point that the selected candidate had to be someone who loves sport and is a role model for others... Angela fits that bill perfectly."

Galea's announcement arrived at the end of an enthusiastic meeting between athletes and officials, from the 48 MOC-affiliated federations, and Mgr Cremona.

After Mass, the Archbishop received sports tokens from the MOC. A personalised GSSE 2007 track suit, with 'Pawlu' printed at the back, was presented to Mgr Cremona by Mr Justice Farrugia Sacco.
