The "obscene vandalism" on the 3,000 pine trees that form part of Foresta 2000 as well as 30-year-old pine trees in L-Ahrax, limits of Mellieha, has been condemned by the Mellieha association of conservationist hunters and trappers.

The association, which forms part of the Federation for Hunting and Conservation, also expressed its contempt for "unfounded accusations" against hunters and trappers, which aim to portray them in a bad light.

The association condemned illegal camping, barbeques in afforestation zones and rubbish dumped in picnic areas.

The association said it always worked to ensure that its members contributed towards the environment. For the last 20 years it had organised an annual environment conservation programme including the planting of trees, the building of rubble walls and the collection of domestic waste from afforestation zones.
