Appreciation - Liliana Psaila-Savona

Paul Psaila-Savona from Perth, W. Australia, writes:

It is not easy to write an appreciation of one's sister-in-law and not be accused of bias. I refer to Liliana, the wife of my brother Joe. However, anyone who knew her will accept that my description of her is truly deserved. There will be very few people who have met her and have, at some time or other, not been disarmed by her engaging smile, charm, good looks and friendliness.

Liliana had the misfortune of being struck at a very early age by cancer. This was initially diagnosed many years ago and came as a big shock to all of us at the time.

With the strength of her character which mirrored the strength of her personality, she accepted this with fortitude.

She was able to stall the progress of her condition to the extent that we all believed she had won the unequal tussle with the tumour. Indeed, 18 months ago, when I was in Malta and I went with her shopping (which she dearly loved), I was impressed by her boundless energy and joie de vivre and it was I who had to seek refuge in a café to have a rest.

Alas, it was not to be. The dreaded malignancy eventually caught up with her. With her considerable optimism, even a few days before passing away, she still believed that she would win.

Nothing was ever a big problem for her. She was a pillar of strength for her husband, children and grandchildren, who adored her and whom she adored.

She was generous and always ready to help those who truly needed her help most, whether it was her immediate family or people unrelated to her in Zejtun or from many miles around.

It is well known that my brother's venture into political life was assisted in no small way by her ability to mix with and assist people in all walks of life. Indeed, it was often stated that she would have made a good politician herself.

Liliana is now in the arms of her Maker. When I passed on my condolences to my brother and offered my prayers for her, his prompt response was that she would be praying for us.

The good Lord above has decided that she will be more effective to give help from heaven to those of us who remain here.

My thoughts and prayers together with those of my family go to the loved ones she left behind - her adoring husband, her three lovely daughters Anika, Katja and Greta and their respective families. May she rest in peace.
