The Department of Architecture and Urban Design recently hosted a guest lecturer, Professor André De Naeyer from the University of Antwerp in Belgium.
The main theme of Professor De Naeyer's lectures was adapting historic buildings to modern uses through combined restoration-refurbishment projects, with examples drawn up from his vast experience in the field.
The theme is of special relevance to architecture students in the context of Malta's UNESCO world heritage site of Valletta and the island's rich heritage and numerous listed buildings.
Various design challenges were also discussed in informal tutorial sessions with various student groups, co-ordinated by the head of the department, Professor Denis De Lucca, and Dr Vince Buhagiar.
Professor De Naeyer also delivered a key lecture to students following the Diploma in Baroque Architecture course in the International Institute for Baroque Studies. The lecture was also followed by visits to the various sites undergoing restoration, co-ordinated by architect Hermann Bonnici.
