Sprinter Charlene Attard and thrower Jean Paul Callus stole the show on the opening day of the MAAA national championships when setting new national records.

Attard underlined her excellent form ahead of next month's GSSE in Monaco with a national record in the 200m. She clocked 24.52 seconds, 0.04 of a second inside her previous mark of 24.56.

Callus broke the 61-metre barrier in the javelin with a throw of 61.07 metres, an improvement of 64cm on the previous best he set at the 2004 Euro Throwing Challenge in Malta.

Antonella Chouhal shattered the championship's 25-year-old shot put record when she managed 12.28 metres. The previous record belonged to Jennifer Pace who had registered 11.91 in 1982.
