The US Department of Energy has donated two X-Ray fluorescent instruments to Malta Customs in a transfer facilitated by the US Embassy.

These are hand-held instruments which can identify almost all metals and their alloys - which are under international export controls - within a few seconds. Officials from the US Department of Energy are conducting a training programme for Malta Customs officials on how to use the equipment.

US Ambassador Molly Bordonaro officially presented the instruments to Acting Director General of Customs Paul Scerri during a ceremony at Malta Customs. The nine officials who received training were also present during the ceremony along with US Department of Energy officials.

Ambassador Bordonaro said she was very pleased with the excellent working relations between the US Embassy and Malta Customs and looks forward to continuing bilateral cooperation in this area.

Mr Scerri thanked Ambassador Bordonaro for the US government's support and commented on the important role Malta plays in providing security in the Mediterranean.
