Street Sense produced a dramatic stretch run to win the Kentucky Derby on Saturday and become the first Breeders' Cup juvenile champion to capture America's most celebrated race.

Ridden by jockey Calvin Borel, the dark bay Kentucky-bred rallied from next-to-last in the 20-horse race to wear down Hard Spun and win by more than two lengths.

Hard Spun fought gamely but did not have the strength to stay with Street Sense and finished second. Third place went to Arkansas Derby champion and previously unbeaten Curlin.

More than 156,000 people attended the race, including Britain's Queen Elizabeth II.

The next race in the Triple Crown series will be the Preakness Stakes at Baltimore's Pimlico Race Course on May 19.
