Most artists refuse to explain or justify their work, especially their abstracts. It's usually a case of: You see what you want to see. So Luciano Micallef's decision to put his art on the line - as it were and explain his work in print is brave or, some might say, foolhardy.

Whichever way you look at it Abstracts by Luciano Micallef is one of the clearest and most profound books on one painter's art you will read this year. The book is a stunning testament to the artist's abstract period, which continues to this day. Each plate - photographed by the artist himself - is accompanied by a text commentating on the painting in review. Mr Micallef is rightly notable for his original and often stark use of colour and the reproductions in the book are extremely faithful to the original paintings.

As well as the artist, four other art experts contribute comments on the works illustrated and thinking guru Edward De Bono writes the forward. It is fairly safe to say that after thumbing through Abstracts anyone viewing Mr Micallef's work in future will see it in a much clearer light.
