This year's writing competition is the fourth in a series of competitions that we at Showtime have been running since we began publication. The previous three competitions drew an enormous response from you... and this year looks like being equally fruitful.
So far we have received some very well written and even caustic spoof theatre reviews, an excellent piece on what the writer felt was wrong with Notte Bianca's organisation and a very clever article on the use of the Royal Opera House site. This ruin has attracted a number of comments... not all of them positive. But they have shown us that there are quite a few of you with excellent journalistic flair entering the Showtime Writing Competition for 2007.
Remember this time around you are being asked to write a "newspaper" feature on a subject connected to the arts. It can be a review of a theatre production, a concert or an art exhibition. Or it might be a preview of an artistic/cultural event like a play, a recital, a concert, or even a rock concert. Then again you might wish to write a piece on one of our heritage sites or events like Notte Bianca or some historical reenactment. You may even come up with a completely original idea for an arts article, which would be fine by us.
The piece should be no more than 600 words long and be written in a journalistic style, which should make the reader want to read it.
Entries should be sent to:
The Showtime Writing Competition 2007, Allied Newspapers Ltd, 341 St Paul's Street, Valletta.
The competition is open to all readers of The Times and The Sunday Times, but not to employees and dependants of employees of Allied Newspapers Ltd.
Each entry (you may send as many as you like) must be your own work and not previously published. It must also be in the English language.
All entries must reach us by October 30 and will be judged by a panel of experienced newspaper people, both editors and journalists.
Prizes will be: From Allied Retail And Commercial Ltd: Lm50 worth of books.
From Masquerade: Two tickets for each of their performances throughout 2008.
From the St James Centre For Creativity: Two tickets per month to the St James cinema.
