Music at the Manoel

The remarkable thing about Maltese pianist Charlene Farrugia is not just the fact that she is hugely accomplished, she is also still very, very young. She began studying piano at the age of six under the tutorship of Dolores Amodio Chircop. Then, after obtaining various music diplomas, she made her debut with the National Orchestra at the Manoel Theatre at the age of just 13, playing Mendelssohn's Concerto no 1, under the baton of Mro Jonathan Butcher. In October, 2004, she performed again with the same orchestra, as a soloist in Poulenc's Concerto for piano and orchestra in D minor, this time, under the direction of Michael Laus. Since which time she has built an international reputation as a highly talented and sensitive virtuoso musician. Ms Farrugia will be back at The Manoel Theatre this month, at the Sala Isouard next Tuesday, when she will be playing a programme of music by Mozart, Beethoven, Lizst and Brahms.

There are two full-scale concerts this month. The first is an orchestral concert with the National Orchestra under the direction of Mro Laus on May 15 at 7.30 p.m. It will feature as soloists both the leader of the orchestra Marcelline Agius, together with first violinist Nadia Debono. Also appearing will be the Italian piccolo virtuoso Niccolo Mazzanti.

Then on May 28 again at 7.30 p.m. there will be a Grand Operatic Concert in the main theatre, supported by the Maltese Embassy in the US.

There will also be two more in the extremely popular series of Lunchtime Concerts in the Sala Isouard. The first will take place on My 16 and the final recital of the month will be on May 30. Both will commence at midday.

Yet more live music will be in evidence in the Manoel Theatre Courtyard on May 9 and May 30, both at 8 p.m., when two silent films will be shown. The first will be The Golem and this will be accompanied and indeed illustrated by music from pianist Tim Ellis. Then on May 30 the silent movie will be Inferno, based on Dante's Inferno, when the accompanist will be Daniel Schembri.
