In a previous letter (The Sunday Times, February 19) I outlined my unhappiness with the state of abandon of the Salina saltpans after part of the sea wall had washed out three years ago.
The letter fell on totally 'deaf' ears. The tenant has made no move, environmentalists have made no move, and government PROs have also totally ignored it, as have the normally responsive regular correspondents.
This leads me to believe one of two things.
No official body gives a tinker's curse for our heritage and 'constructions' outside the two major cities. However much damage could be minimised and could easily be preserved if restored in a short period after damage had occurred. Ghajn Hadid tower is another case in point where continued vandalism will soon ensure that it's rendered down to its foundations.
Or, in this pauper state, where the begging bowl is eternally held out, as it was in Tarag Nix Mangiari when the 'packets' disgorged their passengers down at the Valletta wharf a couple of centuries ago, ministers of the state simply hope that the ever-munificent European Union will supply funds for the restoration of the salt pans. Not such a far-fetched theory when one considers that the EU provided the funds for our rather odd selection of cycle lanes.
