Emanuel Fiorentino (The Sunday Times, April 22) most deservedly praised Andrew Micallef's exhibition of 42 paintings and ink drawings which were on view at the Auberge d'Italie, remarking that "one is left awe-struck by the excellence of the techniques employed and immediately starts asking whether they can ever be improved by the artist in question."
The high class of his designs have attracted philatelists and others, in Malta and abroad, ever since he was commissioned by Maltapost to design the annual set of 16 stamps on varied subjects, the first in 1999 on the Fauna of the Mediterranean Sea. These have been followed by Birds of Malta (2001), Seashells (2003), Mammals and Reptiles (2004), Insects (2005), Domestic Pets (2006) and the current set on sale, Maltese Fruits (2007).
Can one ever do it better? Mr Fiorentino asks. A look at Micallef's stamp designs provides the answer.
