I refer to Charles Sacco's letter (Snail Mail, April 24). Maltapost handles 45 million postal items annually, and 93 per cent are delivered the next day which is an all-time high. I am proud of this achievement which is due to the efforts of every person working at Maltapost.
While we do not expect any thanks, as it is our business to provide an efficient service, it is unfortunate to note sarcastic comments like Mr Sacco's, when an occasional item is delayed.
Furthermore, Maltapost is often blamed for delays in foreign mail, which could depend on a number of postal companies and carriers. Mr Sacco has a mistaken perception that previously mail used to be delivered same day. This applied only to mail posted before 7 a.m. within the same sorting branch, which accounted for less than eight per cent of all mail. The old system was extremely inefficient in the use of resources, and would today cost about 18c for a 50g letter.
Maltapost will continue to strive to further improve its performance for the benefit of our customers and shareholders.
