Juan Pablo Montoya has been fined $10,000 and placed on probation after making an inappropriate gesture to another driver, NASCAR said this week.
Montoya's gesture was seen on live television during a practice session for the NASCAR Busch series last Thursday at Phoenix International Raceway.
The 31-year-old Colombian former Formula One driver, who is in his first full season of NASCAR competition, would remain on probation until December 31, NASCAR officials said.
He finished 21st in the Busch race in Phoenix.
The winner was Jeff Gordon who pushed his way past Tony Stewart on lap 300 and held on to win his first NASCAR Nextel Cup race at the Phoenix one mile oval on Saturday.
Four-times NASCAR champion Gordon became the first driver to win from pole position at the track. It also reduces to two the number of active tracks where he has not had a victory - Texas and Miami Homestead speedway.
