The General Workers Union's youth section will mark the 49th anniversary of the April 28, 1958 riots in protest against the socio-economic situation in Malta under the British with a discussion on the theme Il-Haddiem Ghajjat: Irrid Id-Drittijiet, at the Workers Memorial Buildings in Valletta today at 5.30 p.m.

Union representatives will also place flowers at the monument dedicated to the workers in Msida on Saturday at 10 a.m. Commenting on the socio-political significance of those events, the GWU's youth section said that the riots had paved the way not only for Malta to detach itself from foreign political dependence and from colonialism, but also from any military ties.

The GWU youths said more than anything else it was a political vision for a neutral country which reached its climax through the attainment of Independence on September 21, 1964 and the closure of the British military base on March 31, 1979.
