Foreign Minister Michael Frendo met his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov in Luxembourg on the fringes of a meeting of EU foreign ministers. The government said Dr Frendo raised the question of Russia's ratification of the double taxation agreement to which Mr Lavrov replied he would seek an early conclusion to the ratification process.

Dr Frendo also referred to the need to expand the Maltese Embassy's premises in Moscow, particularly its consulate, in view of the opportunities to enhance tourism from Russia as a result of the entry into force of the Visa Facilitation Agreement with the EU on June 1.

On relations with the Arab world, Mr Lavrov responded positively to Malta's initiative for a more structured relationship between the EU and the Arab League as a means of supporting moderate governments in the region.

Both ministers exchanged views on recent developments in Kosovo.
