The police are holding a man and a woman after netting what they believe to be the largest ecstasy haul in Malta.

Nearly 29,000 ecstasy pills were seized when the police raided a flat in Qawra late on Tuesday afternoon. The street value of the drugs runs into tens of thousands of liri.

The police are understood to have pounced after weeks of intensive investigation. The pills, contained in plastic sachets, had just been imported and were being stored and sold from the apartment, the police said.

A 32-year-old man from Mosta and an 18-year-old woman from Rabat were arrested in connection with the find.

The police said charges may be brought against them in the coming days.

Magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera appointed a team of court experts to assist in an inquiry she has opened into the find.
