Sonny Portelli is today expected to be appointed chairman of the Malta Council for Economic and Social Development.

He succeeds Victor Scicluna, who stepped down last February.

Sources confirmed last night that Mr Portelli's name was chosen after meetings Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi had with the social partners. Mr Portelli was nominated by most of the social partners.

Mr Portelli started his career in the civil service and in the late 1970s joined the tourism industry. A marketing specialist he is Maltacom's non-executive chairman.
