Whoever designed the traffic regulations in Valletta which came into force last weekend is adding a new dimension to traffic management.

It now also includes the creation of additional and avoidable traffic through clever positioning of additional signs, forcing motorists to drive in circles.

There's no other explanation for arrangements sending all the numerous cars which have made it to the upper part of Merchant Street, about to leave the city, all the way back towards St Elmo through St Paul Street to look for another way out.

There are no signs anywhere warning drivers that Merchants Street is closed at the top while some streets connecting Merchants Street and St Paul Steet now even have "No entry" signs on both sides, making it impossible to avoid driving in circles without breaking the law!

Valletta has become even more traffic choked than before.

When new traffic regulations were announced, we were promised less traffic and pollution.

How come that exactly the opposite is now happening?
