HBOS has transformed itself from a retail bank into a financial powerhouse and is now a top 10 FTSE company with 23 million customers, 2.1 million shareholders and is the number one UK mortgage and savings provider.
The HBOS Group registered a profit of £5.7 billion for 2006 and is building a platform for sustainable growth, according to Douglas Ferrans.
Mr Ferrans is the chairman of Insight Investment Management Ltd, which forms part of the HBOS Group. Insight is a partner of Bank of Valletta in the fund management business, holding a 40 per cent stake in Valletta Fund Management Ltd.
The partnership has allowed VFM to introduce a range of innovative products and to offer a service for the benefit of the long-term interests of investors.
Mr Ferrans attributed the success of HBOS to a clear strategy that had value creation as its main objective. He said the HBOS strategy is based on four central pillars, namely, growing the UK franchise, adopting a targeted international expansion, cost leadership and capital discipline. He also outlined the distribution strength of HBOS which manages a portfolio of over 40 financial services brands.
Mr Ferrans was in Malta recently to attend a board meeting of VFM. During his visit, he delivered a presentation to the senior management of the BOV Group and also met with Parliamentary Secretary Tonio Fenech, Prof. Joe Bannister, chairman of the Malta Financial Services Authority and held various other business meetings.
Mr Ferrans augured that the Bank of Valletta Group would continue on its success of recent years as Malta continued to establish itself as a reputable financial services centre in view of the clear competitive advantages that it had to offer.
