Shosholoza, the America's Cup team everybody loves to love, proved they were not in Valencia to make up the numbers yesterday, beating one of the favourites Luna Rossa by a hefty 36 seconds.
The first African boat ever to challenge for sailing's most prestigious prize, Shosholoza have been a fairytale team, doing things "proudly South African" like hosting "brai" barbeques on the roof of their base and welcoming anybody who wishes to come in.
On the water, they have come a very long way. Earlier this week, Shosholoza took an early lead off favourites BMW Oracle. They lost the lead when they dropped their spinnaker in the water on the second turn but were still pleased with their performance.
There were no such mistakes yesterday when the South Africans kept their cool as the Italians chased them around the course and Shosholoza did just that to notch up a great win.
BMW Oracle beat Luna Rossa in the second match of the day to take their winning streak to 5-0. They lead the board with 13 points, followed by Team New Zealand on 10.
