As global gymnastics is stretched to new extremes, following fundamental changes to the scoring system, the sport locally continues to thrive.
With the national team now figuring regularly in international competitions and the sport attracting more interest at all levels, the Malta Gymnastics Federation (MGF) is looking to keep the upward trend going.
Last month, the MGF, represented by three of its affiliated clubs, took part in an Inter-College Sports Festival organised by the Education Division's Physical Education section in conjunction with the Maltese Olympic Committee (MOC) and the Kunsill Malti Ghall-iSport (KMS).
The event drew together a large number of young students who were provided with a chance to sample, in a non-competitive environment, a range of 19 sports disciplines, including gymnastics.
For the occasion a selection of gymnastics equipment was made available by the clubs involved and sessions were led by trained coaches as the students tried rhythmic and artistic gymnastics and aerobic gymnastics.
In a statement, the MGF said that with the support and efforts of all those involved they are forging partnerships with national sports organisations and the success of initiatives like the Inter-College Sports Festival set the stage for other similar events.
