I would like to congratulate John Zammit and his supporting team for organising last week's Tour ta' Malta cycle race.

This will have been the 13th time that I have been fortunate enough to bring a British team to this wonderful race and I never cease to be amazed with the energy and enthusiasm of Mr Zammit and his small band of helpers.

I know I can speak for all the cyclists when I thank the Police and Wardens for their help, and the staff at the Marina Hotel for the excellent way they treated us.

It was unfortunate that two cyclists required medical treatment at St Luke's Hospital but although injured, I'm sure they also would like to thank the staff for their help.

The Tour ta' Malta has become a significant early season race for teams from Germany, Holland, Italy, Sicily and Great Britain.

Each year the competition gets harder but, always, the Maltese cyclists rise to the occasion.

So, it was especially pleasing for me to see Etienne Bonello on the winners' podium after his best ever placing in this race.

Having the Tour ta' Malta held each year is essential to help raise the standard of Maltese cyclists. This event lures many foreigners to the island and it should receive all the support that can be given.

This is a major cycling event which, apart from the intense competition that the local riders get, also touches tourism as many competitors will come back for their holidays. So, again, congratulations for a tremendous tour.
