A total of 27,350 Maltese went abroad in January and February, an increase of nine per cent over the same period last year, the National Statistics Office said yesterday.

Almost 85 per cent travelled to EU destinations, the most visited countries being the UK and Italy.

Males accounted for 64.8 per cent of the number of passengers. And the largest proportion of passengers - 51.6 per cent - were aged between 25 and 44.

The figures included travel by both air and sea.
