The police are still trying to establish the identity of the man who drowned at Ghar Qawqla, Marsalforn, last Wednesday.

Sources said the police are working on the theory that the victim was a Sudanese living on his own in Gozo. It is thought he escaped from detention in Safi in 2005 after arriving in Malta illegally.

As part of an inquiry, samples were taken from the corpse to carry out a DNA test against samples obtained from the man's medical records that are kept at the Safi detention centre. Police investigators are still awaiting the results of the DNA test.

The sources said that in the course of investigations to establish the man's identity, they came across conflicting information about the man's name.

Magistrate Paul Coppini is holding an inquiry.
